Albert Sydney Johnston High School Orchestra

Welcome Back!

School starts August 16th.   

The returning students will find several changes to the school this year.   First, we divided the school into three smaller high schools, basically academies.   Some of you will belong to the Academy of Global Enterprises and Informational Technology, some to the Academy of Scientific Inquiry and Design, but probably most of you will belong to the Academy of Arts and Humanities, as per your choices.   The whole idea is that we are allowing you all to streamiline your education as to focus moslty on what you want or need for college or a carreer.

Another big change is we will be on block scheduling.  So, I will only see you every other day, and for about 90 minutes.  So, here will be the structure of our classes:

                                       Start: enter, tune, warm-ups: 5 minutes.

                                        Rehearsal, excersizes etc.: about 55 minutes.

                                        Studio Class: the remainder of class. 

In Studio Class, we will use the time as a group lesson and play solos, scales, etudes etc.   Mainly, it is a fun way to get used to playing for others and helping each other out with our technique.   It's always better to have an extra set of ears.

Welcome to another year of Johnston Orchestra!!!

Welcome!
School will be starting in mid-Ausgust, so for your information, here is a run-down of the first week or so of classes:
Aug. 16: return to school. You will pick up schedules etc.
This week we will be handing out the JHS Orchestra Handbook, and going over the calendar of events, etc. I will also be making contact with parents (if I have not already). By the end of the week I hope to have instruments checked out to you and have us up and running and preparing for our first concert (date TBA).

Concert Time is upon us!

Students and Parents/Guardians:

   Concert time is here:   Tonight in the PAC at 7pm.  Students should plan on being here for an after school rehearsal, as you probably have seen in your child's handouts.   

4.30-5.30 Rehearse

5.30-6.30 Pizza dinner

6.30- set up.

7pm concert.

Johnston Orchestra and Band Concert

MAY 12: the Johnston High School Band and Orchestra Concert will be held at Johnston at the Johnston Performing Arts Center at 7pm.   Orchestra students should arrive at Johnston no later than 6pm in proper concert attire.   

To review this:

Ladies should wear black dresses or nice black or white blouses with black pants/skirt and black shoes.  No athletic shoes or socks.

Gentlemen: Black dress pants, white dress shirt. Black dress socks and shoes.  If you can, please have either a black, red, or blue tie available.   NO ATHLETIC SHOES OR SOCKS! I will provide black coats and ties if available.   

This is a slight departure from previous uniform requirements.  Please have these available.  Go to Goodwill if you need to.  Above all, DO NOT SHARE THAT YOU CANNOT GET THESE THE DAY OF THE CONCERT!!! LET ME KNOW IN ADVANCE!

The concert will count as your final exam grade.  Failure to attend will result in failure of the class.  You will be graded for participation, uniform, supplies, and attendance, like a regular shcool day.  Extra credit for bringing guests!

Please be prepared to complete mastery exams by the end of the first week of May.   Remember, we will be playing all of this the following week at our concert.

Rigaudon test

This Friday, Feb 18th, be prepared to play Rigaudon, beginning to letter T.   

Also, please be prepared to play GM, 2 octaves.

You will also be recieving your music for Danza this week.

February 9-11 I will not be at school. I will be in San Antonio for the Texas Music Educators Association annual conference. While I am away, please practice your new music and warm-ups.
